RIVER - CAPTAIN

JOB DESCRIPTION – Captain

 

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

  • Safe navigation of the ship in compliance with all statutory regulations

  • To make sure that the guests feel comfortable

  • To be a role model for the entire crew

 

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Overall

  • In case of high or low water, damage and technical problems the Captain and the Program Director must take ownership and inform the guests accordingly

  • Train and motivate employees. Ensure Viking’s grooming standards are followed at all times

  • Train new 1st Officers and 2nd Officers with patent

  • Conduct frequently scheduled ship inspections

  • Organization of dumpsters and drinking water

  • Regular checks of mooring lines’ and wires’ condition on a monthly basis

  • Participation in meetings and company relevant trainings

  • Good contact with the authorities, WSP, port authorities, etc.

  • Act as a brand ambassador on behalf of Viking: social obligations towards our guests (presence in public areas, welcome cocktail, Captain's dinner)

  • Attend Cruise Start Meeting with Hotel Manager and Program Director before every cruise, communicate expected changes accordingly and immediately

 

Steering

  • Ensure safe ship operation even in difficult weather / water level conditions

  • Cost-conscious use of all energy resources (fuel, lubricants, etc.)

  • Compliance with timetables and lock times to avoid incidents

 

Administration, Communication

  • Check whether the necessary patents for the driven route are present on board

  • Check if the nautical crew’s service books contain the necessary qualifications for the operating form A1, A2, or B

  • Daily update of the crew scheduling

  • Check and update certificates, credentials, and approvals

  • Responsible for the administrative process and timely submission of all reports

  • Exchange information with the involved departments (Management, Operations, technical department)

  • Attend nautical meetings (also remotely and during the season on a higher frequency)

 

Security

  • Overall responsibility for safety on board the ship

  • Compliance with the compulsory guidelines, instructions (nautical manual, safety manual) and laws

  • Co-responsible for the impeccable cleanliness, hygiene and order on board

  • In an emergency, the Captain takes over the command of the entire crew

 

YOUR PROFILE

 

  • At least 1 year of work experience as a Captain/several years as a 1st Officer

  • Interested in further education (eg. certificate extension, language skills)

  • Independent and flexible

  • Decisive and assertive

  • Strong team worker and able to train/ lead the crew

  • Shows ambition and initiative; perseverant

  • Genuine interest in guest communication


Depending in which geographical area you are eligible to sail you need to fulfill the following obligatory requirements:

 

Rhine
- Rhine license km 1’000 – 167 (Amsterdam – Basel)
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Dutch and French are an asset

 

Danube
- Complete Danube license
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Russian is an asset

 

France
- Longeur illimitée
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (expert)
- Languages: French and English (mandatory), German is an asset

 


Supervisors: Director Nautical / Corporate Captain

Captain gives instructions to: Crew
Co-operation with: Hotel Manager, Program Director, Engineer, Administration in Head Office Basel
